But a lot of you do live there, so you might find it useful. Let's say you live in the Marina and for some reason need to go to the Dogpatch or vice versa but you're unsure what the weather is like. Or maybe the grit of the Mission is getting to be a bit much and you want to hang out with a bunch of babies in Noe Valley. Do you pack a sweatshirt or put on shorts?

As eCommerce and Online Sales Surge ... - SEO Consultant London

(PRWEB) May 04, 2012

Oracle Digital, the leading SEO and Internet Marketing Company in Western Australia, has been strongly campaigning for its Social Marketing strategies which have been proven to help build reliable backlinks, boost page ranking, and improve customer relationship, among other benefits. This recent undertaking is in line with current statistics that show the increasing popularity of social networks and the untouched potential that this platform entails.

With the increasing popularity of social networking, marketing analysts consider it as among the best platforms to help businesses reach their target market across the borders and build-up a sustainable consumer relationship. Taking advantage of these social platforms, local businesses will be able to reach further and influence prospective clients to support their products and services that would in effect lead them to dominate their niches as a reputable business.

A recent report from SmartCompany has revealed Amazons plan to build a warehouse in the country. According to market analysts, this impending move, considering that it comes from one of the retail giants online, is most likely influenced by the fact that online sales has been growing at a very fast rate in Australia. They also believe that this move by Amazon will ensure faster shipping times, lower costs and generate more sales.

This latest development is further supported by Ben Hegerty, Savills Associate Director Investments. Hegerty explained that this planned move by Amazon makes clear sense, considering its popularity and the support it gets from the locals. He says, Theyre popular here they could cut down on costs.

Further reports have stipulated that the recent development plan by several online companies to build their corresponding local warehouses in the country will help boost the industrial property market in the long run. A recent analysis undertaken by Knight Frank ? a leading private agency on global property and consultancy in Melbourne, shows how the available industrial-spaces-for-rent in the first quarter of the year fell down by approximately 16%. The report also added that buildings and properties in prime locations are also doing well and is expected to become even better.

Hegerty further correlates this improvement in the industrial property market to the increasing popularity of e-commerce and online companies. He says, Even the cheaper importers such as Sonic, theyre in the market in a big way. Its pretty simple, in that you have less manufacturing on shore. Goods have to come from somewhere to service a market, and they need to be stored.

The undeniable popularity of eCommerce is largely considered by most experts as a big factor that may affect bricks and mortar businesses. They strongly suggest that traditional companies must take the essential steps and engage in online marketing strategies, like Social Marketing, to further their cause.

The crucial role of Social Marketing in the business world is likely supported by Clint Maher, Oracle Digitals Director of Operations. Maher says, Social media has become so big nowadays that it would be unwise for a company to ignore the huge market that this platform brings into the forefront. Fortunately, there are numerous companies all over who are willing to provide assistance to those who are interested.

He further adds, In order to have a successful campaign, however, one must only deal with those companies who have the expertise, the reputation and the technology to speak of. Otherwise, you might get less than you deserve.

With this objective in mind, Oracle Digital has lately marketed its most up-to-date Social Marketing strategies in order to help businesses efficiently promote their product and/or service offerings. This, of course, is aside from the companys other online services, such as its powerful off-page and on-page optimisation techniques, blog management, and reputation management.

Oracle Digital is recognised as one of the leading Digital Marketing Company in Perth, which also serves clients from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. For more information about the company and their services, please call 1300 899 851 or visit their website at http://www.oracledigital.com.au.

Screening for Other Health Problems May Aid COPD Survival - iVillage

FRIDAY, May 4 (HealthDay News) -- People with the often deadly lung condition chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, have an increased risk of death if they also have certain types of other health problems, according to new research.

COPD is a progressive disease involving bronchitis and emphysema, often tied to smoking, that makes it hard for patients to breathe.

The new study included more than 1,600 COPD patients in the United States and Spain who were followed-up for an average of 51 months. The findings were released online May 4 ahead of print publication in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

The researchers looked at 79 other health problems in the COPD patients and found that "12 were significantly and independently associated with an increased risk of death," lead study author Dr. Miguel Divo, a physician in the pulmonary and critical division at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said in a news release from the American Thoracic Society.

These 12 conditions were: lung cancer; pancreatic cancer; esophageal cancer; breast cancer; pulmonary fibrosis; atrial fibrillation/flutter; congestive heart failure; coronary artery disease; gastric/duodenal ulcers; liver cirrhosis; diabetes with neuropathy; and anxiety.

Overall, the average number of other health conditions per patient was six. The average number of other health problems was 6.5 among patients who died and 5.8 among those who survived, the investigators found.

Screening people with COPD for these other conditions and treating them may help improve their survival, noted Divo, who is also an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

While the study uncovered an association between higher death rates and coexisting health problems in COPD patients, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Nugent snaps in first sit-down since Obama flap

Paul J. Richards / AFP - Getty Images file

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

There was no moderation in Ted Nugent?s first interview since his Secret Service investigation, as the rocker, in seconds, switched from unruffled discourse to expletive-ridden rage when asked about his recent political rhetoric.

In a sit-down interview with the "CBS Morning Show" on Friday, set at the musician?s ranch in Texas, Nugent met with journalist Jeff Glor in, what began as, a calm back-and-forth discussion about allegations he had threatened President Obama, and the Secret Service inquiry that ensued.

?I feel sorry for liberals who can be that brain-dead to take a clear statement of fear on my part and turn it into a threat on somebody else,? Nugent told Glor. ?I don?t think their [Secret Service] concern was that I threatened someone, I think their concern is that someone claimed I threatened someone. In fact, I got to tell you, and I don?t mean to put any professionals on the spot, but -- and I don?t have the greatest hearing in the world -- but I thought I heard something to the point of, ?I didn?t think so.??

Nugent described his ?35-40 minute? meeting with the government officials in Oklahoma as ?adorable,? and said he told the officials they were ?responding to complete idiots,? and that ?you should be investigating them.?

Video: Secret Service meets with Nugent

Moments later, Glor talked briefly with Nugent about his spread in the April headlines, referring to it as ?one of the more interesting months you?ve ever had,? though Nugent felt otherwise. The reporter further probed the Republican activist about his support of the Romney campaign, whether or not they disproved of his outspoken candor when it came to the commander in chief, and how they will meet their requisites to obtain the moderate vote.

Here?s where Nugent lost it.

?You are many things, you are not moderate,? Glor pointed out.

After a defensive aside related to?his charity work, Nugent?s temper rose and he began to yell at the reporter. ?I?m an extremely loving, passionate man, and people who investigate me honestly, without the baggage of political correctness, ascertain the conclusion that I?m a damn nice guy. And if you can find a screening process more powerful than that I?ll [BLEEP], [BLEEP], [BLEEP], [BLEEP].?

A momentary pause ensued before Nugent directed his focus off-screen, ?Or [BLEEP][BLEEP][BLEEP]?-- How?s that sound??

Noted Glor, this last statement was aimed at a female CBS news producer off camera. TMZ does the heavy lifting on sorting out what was apparently behind the bleeps.

Video: Romney may suffer backlash from rocker's harsh words

And so, it seems, Nugent?s controversial media blitz spills into May. The rock star?s first return to the limelight came on April 17, when he said at a NRA convention he?d be ?dead or in jail? if Obama was reelected, later referring to himself as a ?black Jew at a Nazi-Klan rally.? On April 21, the military canceled his performance at its post in Fort Knox, Ky.,?citing his anti-Obama comments as justification, and the following week he reportedly signed a plea deal after federal prosecutors brought him to court for illegally shooting a bear on his hunting show.

NFLPA files grievances over bounty suspensions

merrilhogeGetty Images

Merril Hoge has been outspoken on the subject of brain injuries in the NFL since long before it became one of the major issues surrounding the league in the last few years. Hoge?s career was cut short after he had multiple concussions in 1994, and he successfully sued the Bears and their team doctor over the way his concussions were treated during his final NFL season.

But while Hoge is concerned about players suffering brain injuries on the field, he takes strong issue with those who say that concussions are so dangerous that children shouldn?t play football. And on ESPN?s NFL Live, Hoge went off on Kurt Warner, who said on Thursday that he wouldn?t want his kids playing football before later backing away from those comments.

?I think it?s irresponsible and unacceptable,? Hoge said of Warner suggesting that football is a dangerous game for children. ?He has thrown the game that has been so good to him under the bus. He sounds extremely uneducated.?

In Hoge?s view, parents can?t just put their children in bubble wrap and ensure they?ll never suffer a concussion, but what they can do is ensure their children will get proper treatment and adequate time off if they ever do suffer a concussion. And Hoge says that children playing in youth leagues that follow the proper concussion guidelines are actually playing a safer sport than youth football players of times past played.

?Head trauma is not the issue here ? it?s how head trauma is treated,? Hoge said. ?The game is safer than it has ever been because we?re being proactive with head trauma. That is the biggest issue.?

Hoge believes that football is a great game for kids to play, and that it?s wrong for Warner to suggest otherwise.

?I can?t believe that he would share that message because now moms and dads that are out there, and Billy wants to play, but they are uneducated and they are unsure, and they love Kurt Warner, they?re like, ?He doesn?t want his kids to play? Why should I let my kids play???

Hoge said responsible parents should make sure their children?s coaches are following the concussion protocols as outlined by USA Football, but the last thing they should do is tell their kids not to play a sport that gives them great physical benefits.

?The biggest problem in our society today with our youth is obesity,? Hoge said. ?You will do more damage to your son or daughter by allowing them to sit on the couch, play XBox and eat a donut, health-wise, than you will ever do if you put them on a football field and it?s in the right structure. You think of obesity and all the things that come from that ? diabetes and lung and heart and joint issues, we can go on and on ? the last thing we should do is discourage children from activity.?

Thai censors say out, damned spot, out to Macbeth film adaptation

The maker of 'Shakespeare Must Die' is appealing the decision, but Thai bureaucrats are nervous about the movie's political overtones.

The banning of a Thai cinema adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' is causing a stir in Thailand. The censors ruled that the movie ?has content that causes divisiveness among the people of the nation."

In a country where the royal family is protected from criticism by possibly the world's strictest lese-majeste laws (designed to prevent public criticism or ridicule of royals), any drama featuring regicide might be deemed taboo. But?Shakespeare Must Die?seems also to have touched a raw nerve with its depiction of Shakespeare's ambitious but guilt-ridden usurper blended in with scenes of protest and violence redolent of Thailand's recent past.

The country has been beset by on again, off again street protests since 2005. To some, the Macbeth character in the movie is reminiscent of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose apparent vaulting ambition prompted royalist suspicions that he had a real-life anti-monarchy agenda.

Thailand's Culture Ministry told director Samanrat Kanjanavanit that she could only proceed with a bowdlerized version of the government-funded movie, but the filmmakers held their ground.

A red-clad Grim Reaper in the movie was deemed too evocative of the red-shirt demonstrators who took to Bangkok's streets in 2010, in protests that turned violent with more than 90 killed. Another scene inspired by a gruesome massacre of student demonstrators in 1976 was also deemed unacceptable.

Director Samanrat, better known as Ing K., says the censorship makes little sense. "Why do they (the censors) find a 400-year-dead poet so threatening?,? she told the Monitor.? The original Macbeth was penned during a fractious period in English history, probably shortly after the 1605 "Gunpowder Plot," when Catholics aggrieved at religious discrimination sought to assassinate England's King James I, a Scot.

Now, four centuries later, Thailand's volatile politics could hold the key to the censors' anxiety over a now-archetypal tale about how power corrupts man. Mr. Thaksin was ousted from office in a 2006 coup backed by royalist street protestors and faces jail on corruption charges. But his sister Yingluck is the country's prime minister, after her Peua Thai party routed the royalist-leaning Democrats in a 2011 election.

Thailand's 84-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the world's longest-sitting monarch and remains popular, drawing vast crowds onto Bangkok's streets last December for his birthday celebrations. But the combination of color-coded antagonism ("red-shirts" for pro-Thaksin demonstrators, "yellow-shirts" for royalists)? and the King's age makes for nervy bureaucrats, and the censors' actions on the movie come after several recent high-profile jailings for lese-majeste.

While Ms. Yingluck's government has sparked renewed royalist ire by hinting that Thaksin could return to Thailand without having to do jail time, her administration simultaneously pledged not to amend Thailand's lese-majeste laws and to tighten censorship of websites containing allegedly offensive content.

Now it seems even The Bard of Avon is caught up in Thailand's censorship dragnet. Southeast Asia-based documentary filmmaker Bradley Cox saw his?Who Killed Chea Vichea? ? about a Cambodian trade unionist who was murdered in 2004 ? banned in Cambodia. Discussing?Shakespeare Must Die, Mr. Cox told the Monitor that ?it makes one think that the censors must not think that highly of the Thai people, if they feel that they cannot handle the imagery and messages contained in this movie.?

For Ing K., the censors' reaction to the movie says a lot about Thailand, where the government and the opposition are at odds over a reconciliation proposal that, to some, could mean impunity for those involved in recent political violence. ?We don't want to look at ourselves," she lamented, ?we want to forget about painful events in our history."

Space Shuttle Enterprise flyover wows New Yorkers (+video)

Perched atop a modified 747 jumbo jet, the Space Shuttle Enterprise greeted the Big Apple by zooming past the Statue of Liberty and flying along the Hudson River.

Hundreds of space shuttle fans braved the chilly temperatures and biting wind Friday morning (April 27) along the Hudson River here to catch a glimpse of NASA's prototype orbiter as it flew past the museum it will soon call home.

Enterprise, the agency's original test shuttle,?flew to New York today?from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., atop a modified Boeing 747 jet. Before landing at New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, the piggybacking duo flew over the Statue of Liberty, then followed the Hudson River past the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where it will soon be placed on public display.

The shuttle flyover attracted fans of all ages, who gathered around the Intrepid museum and Pier 86 on Manhattan's west side to witness the historic event.

"How often do you get to see something like this ? a shuttle on piggyback coming down the Hudson River?" said Kenneth Irvin, who came with his wife, Ceil, from Long Island. [Photos: Final Voyage of Space Shuttle Enterprise]

As?Enterprise?and its chaperone flew overhead, the crowd, which was made up of men, women and children of all ages, erupted into cheers and applause.

"It was absolutely amazing to see it like that," Adam Schechter said shortly after Enterprise's first pass. Schechter carried his young son, Harry, and spoke energetically about his experiences with the space shuttles, including seeing the STS-97 launch of the shuttle Endeavour in November 2000.

"It was amazing, and the loudest thing I ever heard in my life," Schechter told SPACE.com.

He also recounted a visit he and his son took to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., where Enterprise had previously been on display since 2003.

'Dancing With The Stars': Maria Menounos Scores Season's First Perfect Score

'Extra' host and dance partner Derek Hough earned three 10s for their paso doble in Monday night's competition.
By Kelley L. Carter

It was classical night on ABC's hit dance-competition show, "Dancing With the Stars." The Monday night telecast challenged the celebrities to step up their games, and it paid off: The judges finally gave out their first perfect score of the season.

Similar to last week, after the individual dances, the couples split off into two teams — Team Paso and Team Tango — to get a second score.

The season's first perfect score came when TV journalist Maria Menounos and her pro partner Derek Hough performed the paso doble and judges were in love with what she turned in. Carrie Ann Inaba joked "that dance sucked!" before chasing it with "You were so on fire!" Their score was 30/30 for a total of 57/60 including the bonus dance.

Here's how the others fared:

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas
The opera singer took over the dance floor with her rumba. The judges thought her performance was elegant. Judge Bruno Tonioli said that Jenkins was the "embodiment of the power of beauty" and joked that her dance could have been raunchier. 27/30, for a total of 54/60 with the bonus dance.

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd
The NFL player took on the Viennese waltz and the athlete scored big points with the live audience, judging by their hoots and hollering. Hard-to-please head judge Len Goodman said that the performance was terrific and praised Driver's footwork. 27/30 for a total of 53/60.

William Levy and Cheryl Burke
The Latin heartthrob also danced the Viennese waltz. Judges thought this was one of his best nights ever. Inaba shrieked, saying, "That is true content! That is true dancing!" 27/30, for a total of 53/60.

Roshon Fegan and Chelsea Hightower
The Disney star danced the Argentine tango (and to a classical spin on Lady Gaga's hit "Bad Romance" at that!) and the judges thought the performance came off a bit wobbly. Goodman told him that he "looked a little bit awkward," but added that it was "clean and competent." 25/30, for a total of 52/60.

Jaleel White and Kym Johnson
The former child star danced the Viennese waltz, and judges weren't too impressed with what he brought to the ballroom. Goodman said his footwork wasn't up to par but that he did enjoy the "fairy" feel to his routine. But that was about it. 24/30 for a total of 51/60.

Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy
Both partners were plagued by injuries — Chmerkovskiy had a cyst in his foot — but he stepped it up as best he could for their Argentine tango. In spite of working through the pain, judges really weren't all that impressed. Goodman said that their routine wasn't clean, and Inaba said that the dance was "Cirque du Soleil gone terribly wrong." Ouch. 21/30, for a total of 47/60.

(AP) ? When Louis C.K. released his comedy special "Live at the Beacon Theater" by himself on his website for $5, it was little more than a cautiously optimistic experiment.

Less than two weeks later, it had reaped more than $1 million. Already among the most respected stand-ups in the country, Louis C.K. was suddenly a new media trailblazer, too.

On Tuesday, the Webby Awards announced Louis C.K. is their "person of the year" for setting "a new precedent for distribution." Comedians Aziz Ansari and Jim Gaffigan have since similarly released albums online.

The Webbys, which celebrate Internet achievement, announced the winners of its 16th annual awards on Tuesday. The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which present the awards, shared the winners with The Associated Press shortly before they were to make an official announcement.

The awards spanned the breath of the Internet, from mobile apps like Instagram and Pinterest that have disrupted social media, to entertainers charting new digital ground, like Louis C.K. and Bjork.

Bjork was named artist of the year. Last year, the Icelandic musician released the album "Biophilia" as a multimedia presentation of music and apps.

She was among the special recognitions named by the Webbys, which also cited the photo app Instagram as breakout of the year. It was recently acquired by Facebook for $1 billion.

"It's been a huge year of change," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a group of about 1,000 Web experts and Internet professionals.

Also specially honored were Juliette Lewis and Graydon Sheppard, who share the award for best actress for the viral video "S--- Girls Say." The video, which parodies common expressions, has been watched more than 16.2 million times on YouTube and spawned a viral sensation of countless similar videos. Sheppard, a male comic, appears in drag in the video.

In more than 130 regular categories, the Webbys give two winners per category: an official Webby award and a "people's voice" pick chosen from online votes.

Ferrell, who co-founded the comedy website Funny Or Die, won best individual performance for a video in which he reprised his impression of President George W. Bush, reacting to Osama Bin Laden's death.

The Onion won for best humor website and its video arm, the Onion Network, earned best writing in an online video for its satirical morning TV show video: "How to Get a Guy to Notice You While You're Having Sex With Him."

The pinboard-style website Pinterest won for best social media app, as well as a people's voice award for best functioning visual design. Best music app went to the streaming service Spotify, which Davies said typified "the intersection we're seeing between social and entertainment."

HBO Connect won for best TV website. The New Yorker's website won for best editorial writing.

One new category, people's special achievement for social change, went to Facebook. The award, which was voted for online, honors "important Internet work that played an integral role in advancing and organizing the masses."

The awards will be handed out in a May 21 event at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Patton Oswalt will host the awards, whose winners are famously restricted to five-word acceptance speeches.

Darvish pitches Rangers past Blue Jays

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:40 p.m. ET April 30, 2012

TORONTO (AP) - Yu Darvish acknowledged it felt strange to face the Blue Jays. That didn't stop him from shutting down their lineup.

Darvish won his third straight start, Mitch Moreland and Craig Gentry homered and the Texas Rangers beat Toronto 4-1 on Monday night.

Pitching against a Blue Jays team that reportedly pursued him when his rights went up for auction last December made Darvish (4-0) a little uneasy as he took the mound.

"Honestly, it was kind of an awkward feeling because rumor has it that this was a team that might have posted for me and there was some chance that I might have played for this team," Darvish said through a translator. "Facing the Blue Jays, they could have been my teammates."

Toronto might have wished that themselves on this night, scratching out just one run and four hits in seven innings against the Japanese sensation, the first starting pitcher in Rangers history to win four of his first five games.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell said Darvish was "outstanding" and "as good as advertised," while Rangers skipper Ron Washington called him "electric."

"He had good stuff," Washington said. "Once again, the most impressive thing about him was when he got people on the bag, he made pitches. That's what good pitchers do."

Darvish allowed his first home run but remained unbeaten in five major league starts. He walked two and struck out nine.

"I don't expect him to go 32-0," Washington said, "but the thing about him is he will keep us in ballgames, and that's what we want."

In winning his past three starts, Darvish has allowed just two earned runs over 21 2-3 innings against Detroit, the New York Yankees and Toronto. His season ERA is 2.18.

"I'm very aware that all these hitters are seeing me for the first time," Darvish said. "It's only April. So I'm not thinking about how I did this month or being satisfied. Right now all I'm thinking about is preparing well for the next start."

Mike Adams worked the eighth and Joe Nathan finished for his sixth save in seven chances.

AL West-leading Texas won for the 17th time in April, matching the 1989 team for the second-most victories in the season's opening month. The Rangers won a record 18 April games in 1998.

Texas slugger Josh Hamilton was held out of the lineup with a sore back. Hamilton, who leads the AL with nine home runs and 25 RBIs, left Sunday night's loss to Tampa Bay in the third inning with back spasms. He is day to day.

Moreland and Gentry, the eighth and ninth hitters in Texas' lineup, swatted back-to-back solo shots off rookie left-hander Evan Crawford in the seventh, giving Darvish some extra cushion.

It was the third time this season the Rangers have hit consecutive home runs. Moreland's homer was his third while Gentry's drive was just his second in 213 career at-bats over parts of four seasons, and his first to clear the fence: His only other one was as an inside-the-park homer against Seattle last Sept. 23.

Texas opened the scoring in the second when Adrian Beltre led off with a double and scored one out later on a double by Nelson Cruz. The Rangers added one more in the third when Ian Kinsler drew a one-out walk and scored on Elvis Andrus' RBI double.

Darvish didn't allow a hit until the fourth but when he did, it was a big one. After being hit on the left elbow by a pitch in the second, Edwin Encarnacion responded by lining a two-out solo homer to left, his eighth of the year and fourth in four days.

It's the second time in his career that Encarnacion has homered in four straight games, something he also did in the final four games of 2010. Following his leadoff single in the seventh, Encarnacion had reached safely in nine straight plate appearances dating to Saturday, recording five hits, walking twice and twice being hit by a pitch. The streak ended when he struck out in the ninth.

The hard-luck loser was Blue Jays right-hander Kyle Drabek, who dropped his second straight start. Drabek (2-2) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out a career-high eight, including five straight during one stretch.

"I was able to command my fastball a lot better than the last two outings," Drabek said. "I had my cutter working, that was probably my best pitch for me. Some hard-hit balls, but I'm happy with where my fastball command was at."

NOTES: Darvish threw 97 pitches, 62 strikes. ... Kinsler's run in the third was his AL-leading 24th, setting a Rangers record for April. ... Citing Toronto's artificial turf, Washington started Beltre at DH, with Michael Young taking over at third base. ... The Blue Jays turned their major league-leading 31st double play. ... Attendance was 21,945.

Nationwide Poll found 7 out of 10 women suffering from menopausal symptoms are not treated; Majority not talking to their doctors about various relief options

May 1, 2012 (Chevy Chase, MD) Women going through menopause now have a first-of-its-kind interactive guide to help them better understand their menu of treatment options, including whether hormone therapy may be right for them. The Endocrine Society and its Hormone Health Network today released the "Menopause Map," an online tool to help women and their doctors discuss which hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options would be most effective and safe to relieve the sometimes debilitating symptoms of menopause. A new accompanying survey found that the majority of women facing challenging symptoms are concerned about hormone treatment and are not discussing it, or other non-hormonal options, with their doctor. The Map was developed by Endocrine Society physician experts who specialize in menopause management.

The tool is based on the latest unbiased research and is intended to jumpstart conversations between women and their doctors about the choices available to them as they approach and experience menopause.

Hormone therapy has been under intense scrutiny since 2002, when a large government study called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) reported that hormone therapyspecifically the combination of estrogen and progestin togetherincreased the risk for blood clots, stroke, breast cancer and heart attacks. The researchers halted the study and concluded that the risks of hormone therapy outweighed the benefits. Although the study was designed to evaluate the role of hormone therapy in the prevention of diseases related to aging, many women and their doctors also abandoned it as therapy for menopausal symptoms.

Over the past 10 years, additional research has found that the level of risk depends on the individual woman, her health history, age, and the number of years since her menopause began. In general, younger women (under 60) who have recently started menopause are at a lower risk than older women when taking low doses of hormone therapy.

"Left with the false impression that hormone therapy isn't a safe option, far too many women have suffered in silence thinking their options for symptom relief were limited or non-existent," says Cynthia Stuenkel, MD, a member of The Endocrine Society and an endocrinologist specializing in menopause at the University of California, San Diego. "We know that for some women, hormonal therapy provides the only relief for severe menopausal symptoms. Women deserve some clear answers and helpful tools to engage their doctors in meaningful conversations about the multiple choices available to improve their menopausal symptoms."

When a woman enters menopause, she stops menstruating and her body produces less of the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. The process of menopause takes years. During that time, women may experience moderate to severe symptoms, including hot flashes, interrupted sleep, vaginal dryness, and other symptoms that affect her quality of life.

The survey found that 72 percent of women currently experiencing symptoms have not received any treatment for them. Other findings include:

  • Majorities of menopausal women experiencing symptoms have not talked to their primary health care provider or OB/GYN about hormone therapy (62%) or non-hormone options (61%), and half of them have not talked about lifestyle changes;
  • Nearly half (49%) of menopausal women experiencing symptoms have a negative impression of hormone therapy; and
  • While the sample sizes of African Americans and Latinas in the survey are small, only 17 percent of African-American respondents say they have talked to their doctors about hormone therapy, compared to 39 percent of white women and 35 percent of Latinas, suggesting that disparities may exist.

"Unfortunately, as in many health care issues, significant disparities exist. Add to that, many primary care doctors don't have enough information about the latest research or what to prescribe," Dr. Stuenkel says. "We want to make health care providers across the nation aware of this tool so that they can facilitate better discussions with their patients."

The "Menopause Map" is an online interactive tool that guides a woman through the different options available to get relief from her symptoms through a series of prompting questions about those symptoms and her personal health history. The Map also has links to questionnaires that help assess current risk for breast cancer, heart disease, and stroke. The tool weighs hormonal and non-hormonal therapies against the risks based on individual symptoms and medical history.

The Map was not designed to be a self-diagnostic tool. It's recommended that women print out their results along with a list of provided questions to discuss the best treatment options for them with their provider. Women should revisit this tool to check their symptoms and have a continuous, informed dialogue with their provider.

The important facts to know about hormone therapy are:

  • Women 60 years and older should not use menopausal hormone therapy.
  • Women 50-59 years or younger, with no family or personal history of breast cancer, no history of heart disease or stroke, and with moderate to severe menopausal symptoms are the best candidates for hormone therapy.
  • If considering hormone therapy, women should talk with their health care provider to determine a plan that is right for them.
  • In addition, lifestyle approach also helps alleviate symptoms and benefit long-term health.
  • For those who decide on hormone therapy, this is an ongoing process and might require a period of trial and error to find the right fit for each individual woman.
  • For those who decide on non-hormonal options, there are several proven therapies available that may help with symptoms. It is important women share information about all medications they are using, including over-the-counter drugs and nutritional supplements, to make sure the choice of therapy doesn't interact with other medications.

Angry Birds Space hits 50 million milestone, smashes it, crushes pig in the process

It helps to be free on the fastest-growing mobile platform, but that shouldn't draw all the attention away from Rovio's latest announcement. It's space-based reinvention of Angry Birds has now topped 50 million downloads in under 35 days, breaking its (and presumably everyone else's) record for mobile game downloads. In Rovios's own way, it recently thanked eager gamers for their consistent downloading support by slathering ten additional levels on both the iOS and Android version last week.

Mozilla dispatches Firefox 3.6, fills its chair with version 13 beta

If you've been defiantly clinging onto Firefox 3.6 by your fingertips, bad news. Mozilla is officially putting it to sleep -- whether you like it or not -- by auto-updating users to version 12. You've still got a few days to bid your emotional farewells, with the switchover being pegged as early May. But, the browser's creators stop short of setting a date for you to get the flowers delivered by. Official support for the 2010 release finished this week, and the final bout of security fixes was back in January. At the other end of the spectrum, Firefox 13 wobbled up onto its beta legs yesterday, bringing a new homepage, Google's new SPDY protocol and tab extra features with it. If you're making the leap, don't panic if you find some old friends missing.
