RIM sells a million new BlackBerry 10 phones in 4Q

TORONTO (AP) ? Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday that it sold about 1 million of its critically important new BlackBerry 10 devices and returned to profitability in the most recent quarter.

The earnings provide a first glimpse of how RIM's new touch-screen Z10 is selling internationally and in Canada since its debut Jan. 31. Details on the U.S. launch are not part of the fiscal fourth quarter's financial results because the Z10 just went on sale in the U.S. last week.

In the quarter that ended March 2, RIM earned $98 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with a loss of $125 million, or 24 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 36 percent to $2.7 billion, from $4.2 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected $2.82 billion.

"I thought they were dead. This is a huge turnaround," Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said from New York.

Misek said the Canadian company "demolished" the numbers, especially its gross margins. RIM reported gross margins of 40 percent, up from 34 percent a year earlier. The company credited higher average selling prices and higher margins for devices.

"This is a really, really good result," Misek said. "It's off to a good start."

Chief executive Thorsten Heins said he implemented numerous changes at the company over the past year and those changes have resulted in RIM returning to profitability.

The company also announced that co-founder Mike Lazaridis will retire as vice chairman and director.

March 24, 2013 ? Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic each got through their third round matches on Sunday while dropping only six games each, showcasing their mental prowess and vigor. Djokovic was untroubled in his dominating match of Somdev Devvarman, strolling through a second set that was nowhere near as close as the 64 scoreline indicated. Meanwhile, Sharapova was seemingly forced to work much harder in her own 6-4, 6-2 win over Elena Vesnina.

Djokovic, a clear favorite, will next face Tommy Haas in the fourth round, while Sharapova will go up against Klara Zakopalova, who ousted last week?s BNP Paribas Open semifinalist Maria Kirilenko in straight sets.

Though it may not initially come to mind, Sharapova and Djokovic can probably each be described as the most laid-back top players on their respective tours. Both are fiery competitors on the court, but once they step off court, each is easygoing and willing to joke around with their team and other top players. Djokovic and Sharapova, in particular, did several commercial spots together for HEAD Tennis previously, and it gives a good insight into their personalities.

But having an easygoing personality doesn?t hold these players back from being fierce competitors on court.

Djokovic, today, gave two important insights into what drives him on court. He spoke of the inspiration that he receives from his fans, saying, ?It?s incredible just to see the amount of passion that the people have who support me and who feel that what I do inspires them.? That?s a strong quote and really helps the fans feel involved in the game itself.

The Serb also explained that there was a mental component that wasn?t quite there yet in his game a few years back. He was a consistent top 3 player, but he couldn?t consistently beat Federer and Nadal until 2011.

?It was a process of learning, understanding who I am, what I need to do on and off of the court, maturing. I was patient. I did have my doubts definitely through this period, but (my team) and great friends always believed in my abilities and convinced me that I could do it. I also believed very much that I could be No. 1 of the world.?

Sharapova also gave a lot of insights into her own mental state on court today. She spoke about taking everything one match at a time, even though she can take world No. 1 at the end of this tournament if Serena loses early. She showed a personal side in her tennis too, talking about memories of coming to this tournament with her parents when she was younger.

It?s important to realize that there is a great deal that goes into these players? games. It is so much more than just talent and executing on the court. It?s the little things that can add a mental edge or a boost in confidence.

It is wanting to inspire fans, or memories as a child, or even an intense desire to be just a tiny bit better than ever before. And for some players, that means being serious and totally zoned-in all the time. But for others, it?s about being relaxed or able to take a joke. Or, as Sharapova easily deflected when asked if her screaming has evolved over the years, ?That?s not for me to judge. It?s more for you.?

How to Play Android Games (and Run Android Apps) on Windows 8

The Windows Store may be fairly light on great apps, but BlueStacks gives you access to over 750,000 apps on your Windows 8 PC ? including lots of touch-enabled games.

Various Android app emulators have been available for Windows for a while, but they haven?t really had a purpose. With touch-screen Windows 8 PCs and tablets, there?s now finally a reason why you might want to run Android apps on Windows.

BlueStacks isn?t perfect and is still in beta, but Lenovo will be shipping it on PCs soon, so they seem to think it?s good enough. However, anyone can currently download and use BlueStacks for free.

Limitations

BlueStacks is still based on Android 2.3, so some parts of the interface will be a bit dated and a few newer apps may not work. It?s only available for Windows 8 systems, not Windows RT computers like the Microsoft Surface RT. However, BlueStacks is considering porting their solution to Windows RT in the future.

Running apps via BlueStacks won?t be as fast as running Android directly on a dedicated tablet, as BlueStacks has to provide an emulation layer. On PCs with weaker hardware, some games and apps may be unusable. BlueStacks touts their current solution as optimized for Microsoft?s Surface Pro.

While BlueStacks can run on older Windows systems and Macs, it makes the most sense on a Windows 8 system with a touch screen. Mouse clicks can be used in-place of touch events, but it?s just not the same. Some games and apps may even be unusable with a mouse if they require multi-touch.

Installation

You can get BlueStacks from BlueStacks.com, which offers a version for Windows 8 as well as older versions of Windows and Mac. BlueStacks also runs GetYourAppsBack.com, a riff off Google?s ?Get Your Google Back? website, which offers instructions for installing the Google search app on Windows 8.

The BlueStacks App Player isn?t a Modern app, as it runs on the desktop. However, it does offer a full-screen environment that mimics Microsoft?s Modern environment on Windows 8.

Using Android Apps on Windows 8

Once it?s installed, you can launch it and search for apps to install by tapping the magnifying glass icon.

BlueStacks needs to connect to a Google account so it can download apps from Google Play, but you can create a unique Google account just for BlueStacks from within the BlueStacks App Player, if you prefer. BlueStacks can also install apps from the Amazon Store ? it will present you with a list of options when you try to install an app.

You can also turn Android apps into windows on your desktop, something not possible with Windows 8?s Modern apps without third-party software.

Clicks can be used to mimic touch events. For example, to swipe up in Temple Run, you could click the screen, hold the mouse down, move the cursor up, and then release the mouse button. However, touch events will feel much more natural.

You can tap or click the home button (the BlueStacks icon) to go back to the home screen. Tap or click My Apps to view apps you have installed and launch them.

BlueStacks definitely isn?t perfect, and proper Windows 8 apps would be preferable. However, while you probably don?t want to use Android apps in full-screen for things like Twitter on Windows 8, BlueStacks opens a whole world of touch-based Android games to Windows 8.

Android apps could also be used to add touch-based functionality to the desktop ? perhaps you could run Twitter?s Android app in a window on your desktop to keep an eye on Twitter and control the small app window with touch.

The first Ouya $99 video game consoles are expected to ship next week to customers who backed the team?s Kickstarter campaign. Users will be able to download and play games on their TV using the small Android-powered game system.

While most of those games will be Android titles optimized for use with a gamepad and TV (instead of a phone or tablet with a touchscreen), you may also be able to play games that were never intended for Android at all ? because the Ouya supports emulators.

Developer Paul Lamb has ported his Mupen64 emulator to the Ouya platform, which will allow users to play Nintendo64 games with an Ouya.

Other developers are also working on emulators for the classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and possibly other consoles as well.

It?s no surprise that you?can use emulators on the Ouya. After all, folks have been designing and running game console emulators on Android phones and tablets for years. And users will be able to side-load any of those apps onto an Ouya.

But the Ouya team is also taking a pretty liberal approach toward emulators in their app store.

In a nutshell, as long as developers don?t offer any copyrighted games or other content, they can distribute their apps in the Ouya store. Lamb?s Mupen64 emulator, for instance, was already approved (although he needs to remove from copyrighted artwork from his screenshots and submit it again).

If you already have an Ouya (or pretty much any other Android device), you can also download the latest beta version of Mupen64 from Lamb?s website.

Theoretically it?s possible for folks to buy a PlayStation, Nintendo64, or other game disc or cartridge and use special hardware and software to rip a video game ROM for personal use with this sort of game emulation software. Most people don?t do that. Instead they download games illegally from the internet, which is why emulators tend to hang out in a relatively gray legal area.

But it?s good to know that in addition to supporting a growing number of Android games, Ouya?s $99 game console will also be able to play hundreds of classic games that were always meant to be used with a TV and gamepad.

The Ouya game console features an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage and comes with a wireless game controller. While the first units should ship on March 28th, if you weren?t a Kickstarter backer you?ll have to wait until June to get your hands on one.

Mr Salmond said: "With the partial independence the Scottish Parliament has in health, education, justice, business support and social services, we have achieved much - and with the full measure of independence we get by voting Yes, we will achieve much more for Scotland."

The First Minister was addressing the Scottish National Party spring conference in Inverness.

The event came just two days after he said that voters in Scotland would decide the country's future in an independence referendum to be held on September 18, 2014.

Nationalists are using the gathering to set out their arguments for leaving the UK, with SNP leader Mr Salmond stating: "Conference will set out the 'why of independence' to the people - what won't happen in an independent Scotland will be getting dragged into illegal wars, having Trident nuclear weapons dumped on the Clyde for another 50 years, or the imposition of bedroom taxes.

"And what will happen will be the mobilisation of the human and natural resources of Scotland to build a prosperous economy and just society."

Mr Salmond said that in the six years the SNP has been in power in Scotland it had "taken trust in the Scottish Government to a high of 71% - four times more than trust in Westminster".

The First Minister used his conference speech on Saturday afternoon to argue Scotland would be better off economically if the country was independent.

He also sought to contrast policies north of the border with those in England, highlighting the provision of free personal care for the elderly, the increase in police numbers since the SNP came to power and the abolition of university tuition fees for Scottish students.

Independence could also see Scottish parents benefit from a European style system of childcare with a far greater level of public subsidy, the First Minister said.

Mr Salmond said a "transformational shift" in this area should be one of the first acts of an independent Scotland.

While the Scottish Government has already promised 600 free hours of nursery education a year for three and four-year-olds, the SNP leader said only a limited amount could be achieved under devolution.

"We don't have the financial freedom to give us the biggest bang for our buck, to invest in areas where Scotland could make huge social and economic strides," he said

"So let us consider what more we could achieve in an independent Scotland."

Mr Salmond also used his address to hit out at changes to housing benefit which will impact on those with spare rooms.

The under-occupancy charge, which has been dubbed the 'bedroom tax', will see council and housing association tenants have their housing benefit cut from the start of April if they have extra bedrooms.

"This is an iniquitous, unfair, anti-family imposition conceived because of runaway rent levels in the south," the First Minister said.

"Why should people who would impose such iniquity have any power and authority over the Scottish people?"

The First Minister went on: "To listen to the No campaign, they'd have you believe that a new generation of Trident nuclear weapons on the Clyde was a fantastic asset - and having generations of oil and gas revenues to come was a big problem.

"But the people aren't daft, they know that Scottish energy resources are the asset, Trident is the problem and Westminster is the liability."

The First Minister described the referendum as being "Scotland's date with destiny" adding: "September 18 2014 is the day when everyone of us will be asked to take the future of our country into our hands."

In my role as a chiropractor in Champlin Minnesota, ?I have given free health workshops to our community for over 20 years.? One of our most popular classes, Taking Charge of Your Health, is directed at measuring overall wellness level, then giving specific advice to improve wellness quickly and efficiently.? Here?s an example for those of us who never seem to have enough time:

Try Resistance Training

Resistance or strength training, includes any kind of exercise that has resistance from gravity (pull ups, for example), resistance bands, weights, etc. It?should be intense enough that 7-8 repetitions fatigues the muscle to near failure.? If you have never performed the exercise before, start at a lighter intensity of 10-12 reps to failure.? Then gradually increase the resistance until you find that by your 8th repetition you are unable to do another one.? This is called anaerobic exercise and has many more benefits than aerobic exercise.

Aerobic exercise includes traditional exercise such as going for a brisk walk, jogging, cross country skiing and group fitness classes.? They certainly have a place in our fitness program, but resistance training simply gives us more bang for the buck.

If you only?had 20 minutes for exercise, strength training out performs aerobic training for improving/eliminating diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, female infertility, age related poor balance, and even premature aging.

This is supported by research, reviewing hundreds of my patient?s body compostion results and their exercise plans, and my own personal experience.? I have been an avid runner for years but began noticing that marathon runners often times weren?t my healthiest patients.? The patients with the best health markers were the ones that lifted weights?regularly.? They may also do aerobic exercise but the common thread was resistance training.

I have counseled enough patients over the years to know that it is the women that will fight me on this.? There is absolutely no worry about ?bulking up? by adding in resistance training.? Quite the contrary, you will slim down, look healthier and feel great.??I have seen it hundreds of times.

Chemical compounds that halt virus replication identified

Mar. 21, 2013 ? Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have identified a new chemical class of compounds that have the potential to block genetically diverse viruses from replicating. The findings, published in Chemistry & Biology, could allow for the development of broad-spectrum antiviral medications to treat a number of viruses, including the highly pathogenic Ebola and Marburg viruses.

Claire Marie Filone, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at BUSM and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), is the paper's first author and led this study under the leadership of John Connor, PhD, associate professor of microbiology at BUSM and the study's corresponding author. John Snyder, PhD, professor of chemistry at Boston University (BU) and researchers from the Center for Chemical Methodology and Library Development at BU (CMLD-BU) were collaborators on this study.

Viruses are small disease-causing agents (pathogens) that replicate inside the cells of living organisms. A group of viruses known as nonsegmented, negative sense (NNS) ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses cause common illnesses such as rabies, mumps and measles. These pathogens also cause more serious deadly diseases, including Ebola, Hendra and Nipah. Currently, there are no approved and effective treatments against these viruses, which, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are associated with mortality rates up to 90 percent following infection.

"Identifying broad-spectrum antivirals is an important step in developing successful therapies against these and other viruses," said Filone. The basic idea of a broad spectrum antiviral is similar to that of broad spectrum antibacterials in that they would allow one drug to serve as a common treatment for many different viral illnesses.

In this study, researchers identified a new chemical class of compounds that effectively blocked genetically diverse viruses from replicating by limiting RNA production by the virus in cell culture. These indoline alkaloid-type compounds inhibited a number of viruses from replicating, including Ebola.

"Because the production of viral RNA is the first step in successful replication, it appears that we have uncovered an Achilles heel to halt virus replication," said Filone. "These compounds represent probes of a central virus function and a potential drug target for the development of effective broad-spectrum antivirals for a range of human pathogens."

The research was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under grant award numbers RO1 AI1096159-01 and K22AI-064606 (PI: Connor).

MAYPEARL, Texas (AP) ? A Texas sheriff said Thursday that he does not expect any charges will be filed against a man who opened fire on two heavily armed Oklahoma teenagers during an attempted home invasion on his ranch.

Kenneth Chaffin, 17, and Dillon King, 18 ? both of Bethel Acres, Okla. ? died Wednesday afternoon in Maypearl, Texas, authorities said. Their bodies have been sent for autopsies.

Ellis County Sheriff Johnny Brown said that officials think both teens died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, but said that the homeowner fired two deer rifles and struck one of the teens.

"I'm thoroughly convinced that had they not had a way to defend themselves, it would have turned out a different direction," Brown said.

Early Wednesday, Oklahoma sheriff's officials issued an alert for national law enforcement to be on the lookout for Chaffin, who they said ran away Monday from his home, which is about 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. The alert said he had stolen his parents' red 1991 Ford Ranger pickup truck, a stash of prescription medication, 17 guns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition.

On Wednesday afternoon, a homeowner in Maypearl ? 35 miles south of Dallas and some 240 miles south of Bethel Acres ? noticed someone was trying to open her back door. She looked out the window and saw an armed man in a camouflage vest. Brown said that the woman called her husband, who was elsewhere but returned home shortly thereafter.

As the two suspects fled toward a field, they fired at the home, which is located in the middle of a fenced-off ranch with donkeys grazing outside.

"The house is full of holes," Brown said.

The husband returned fire and the woman called 911. Sheriff's deputies found one suspect dead in the field and the other inside the stolen pickup truck. No one else was hurt.

Much of the roads leading up to the home are dirt or gravel. Brown said authorities do not know why the teens came to that house.

"Unfortunately, the answers to those questions died when they did, because we don't have a clue why they were out there in that area," Brown said. "It's beyond me why they would be that far out other than they were looking to take something, or do harm."

Pottawatomie County, Okla., Undersheriff J.T. Palmer said Chaffin and King were identified through photographs and because King had distinctive tattoos on the webbing of his fingers.

The teens lived about a mile apart in Bethel Acres but authorities had no idea the two were together when Chaffin was reported missing, Palmer said, adding that King was not reported missing.

"We didn't actually know there was a second one until we got the call from Ellis County, Texas, that two suspects were killed," Palmer said.

Chaffin's father, Roland Chaffin, told The Oklahoman that his son had never been in trouble with the law and had no family problems before he ran away.

"Kenneth was a follower, not a leader. That's what we figure. He followed someone and got in over his head," Roland Chaffin said.

Palmer said Wednesday that Kenneth Chaffin had taken nine handguns, six rifles and two shotguns from his parents' home.

"My son's not an angel. I'm not saying that he is," Roland Chaffin told the newspaper. "But the Kenneth we know was not capable of this."

On Wednesday night, agent Ralph Cindrich tweeted a sage piece of advice for NFL players, suggesting those who have been released should ?(go) into a hole for 24 hours? ? and that the quiet time should double for players let go for the first time.

I?m not sure if Cindrich was specifically referring to Brian Urlacher, whom the Bears announced they weren?t able to re-sign on Wednesday.?It doesn?t matter, really. In the end, it probably would be sound advice for Urlacher, very much a free agent right now, to have followed.

But let us consider Brian Urlacher?s situation for a moment. The Bears announced?they were planning to move on without him.

I don?t know Urlacher, but I could understand why he would want to explain his side of the story to whomever asked him. Expecting him to turn the other cheek is a little unreasonable. He?s never endured anything like this at the NFL level.

Forget on-field defeats and the like ? he?s coping with losing part of his identity.

I can also understand why he may not have completely ruled out?returning to Chicago, as NFL Network?s Albert Breer reported, even with the franchise moving to make such a return pretty difficult.?We?re talking about the only team, only locker room he?s known. Of course he?d consider reclaiming his spot, shaking this off as best he could, if the Bears were willing to give a little more on their side of the negotiating table.

Well, it?s hard to see that happening now.

If you want to boil this down to strictly business, go ahead. NFL teams make decisions like this all the time.?Did Brian Urlacher overestimate his value? It sure looks like it. The Bears? $2 million offer seems fair to me.

Perhaps Urlacher would be willing to take the same terms to play middle linebacker a different team. He indicated as much in an interview with Sirius XM on Wednesday. Two million dollars, Urlacher told the satellite radio service, ?is a lot of money, don?t get me wrong, but for me to go through a season, put my body through what it goes through during a season at my age, I?m not going to play for that, you know, not for the Bears at least.?

The question, of course, is whether any such deals are out there ? or whether the Bears? offer was as good as it gets.

We will see where Urlacher, who turns 35, goes from here. I?m not sure. He may not know.

But I do know this:?He?s going to hurt on Thursday morning, the dawn of the first day of the rest of his football life.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton touched pen to paper and made history.

Flanked by a cadre of beaming Democrats, Dayton signed into law Wednesday (March 20) legislation creating a state-operated health insurance exchange.

?This is going to serve the people of Minnesota,? Dayton said of MNSURE, the newly-named exchange expected to serve more than 1 million Minnesotans.

?We?re far better off doing it our own way,? the governor said of the state creating its own exchange rather than accepting a federally-created one. Under the Affordable Care Act, the federal government will set up an exchange in any state that doesn?t create one.

Exchange bill authors Rep. Joe Atkins, DFL-Inver Grove Heights, and Sen. Tony Lourey, DFL-Kerrick, were exuberant over their legislation becoming law.

?This is the most significant reform of health insurance we?ve seen in 50 years,? Atkins said.

Lourey, who like Atkins, nursed his legislation through some nine legislative hearings, spoke of emotions.

?It was actually pretty emotional seeing you sign that bill,? Lourey said to Dayton.After signing the legisaltion, Dayton stood and handed Lourey the pen.

The bill signed into law creates a seven-member board to oversee the exchange, described as a virtual marketplace where those needing insurance can shop online, compare and buy.

Although the Senate in its bill looked to tobacco dollars to fund the exchange, the legislation emerged from conference committee having the funding mechanism favored by the House whereby a percentage of insurance premiums are tapped for dollars.

Under the exchange waiver granted the state by the federal government, lawmakers had to speedily pass exchange legislation this session.

The governor is expected to appoint the exchange board by the end of April ? Dayton currently has no one in mind for the open slots, he said.

Under the law, the commissioner of human services will be one of the seven serving on the board.

?I?ll be judged by the quality of the appointments I make,? Dayton said.

While Dayton expressed regret over the perceived politicalization of the exchange and Obamacare ? he called the politics ?ugly? ? the partisan divide? was evident at the bill signing.

No Republicans stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Democrats.

Rep. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, who served on the exchange conference committee, said he felt? forlorn seeing the House and Senate Democrats serving on the conference committee entering the room together.

Republicans question the cost of the exchange, formation of the board, conflict of interest provisions, and argue the exchange will have a deadening effect on the insurance marketplace.

Advocates argue the exchange will save Minnesotans $1 billion by 2016, but Republicans argue an influx of federal funding can?t be considered savings.

Dayton countered that Republicans have been invited to be part of the exchange development process from the start.

A public outreach campaign for the exchange is planned for May, with system testing and network training taking place over the summer.

The exchange call center is expected to open in September, with enrollment beginning a month later.

Plan coverage will start Jan. 1, 2014.

Even if political control at the State Capitol changes ? a Democrat now sits in the Governor?s Office and Democrats control the Legislature ? the fact that board members serve staggered terms and funding is secure makes it less likely the exchange could be dramatically changed quickly, Lourey said.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State begins its pursuit this week of a third straight wrestling national title, but that daunting quest might be overshadowed by the hype over a marquee matchup that could cap the NCAA championships.

If Nittany Lions junior David Taylor defends his individual title at 165 pounds, he would likely have to beat Cornell three-time champion Kyle Dake in the final.

Dake won his third title at 157 pounds last year, after winning the two years before at 149 and 141. He's the only wrestler in NCAA history to win three championships at three different weights. He's trying to become just the third four-time champion in a sport that's been crowning champions since 1928.

The action starts Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa. The potential Taylor-Dake showdown is so anticipated that the NCAA ? in an unprecedented move ? announced that it would start the championship finals at 174 pounds and end at 165 pounds.

That means Taylor and Dake would hit the mat last ? if they last that far.

But odds are good that they will. Taylor (26-1) was last year's Hodge Trophy winner, wrestling's version of the Heisman Trophy. Dake is 32-0 this season with 18 falls.

"When you see an MMA (card) or boxing, they save the biggest bouts for last," Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said. "I think that's what they're trying to do. I can understand that."

Taylor lost to Dake 3-2 in overtime in the championship finals of the Southern Scuffle Tournament on Jan. 2, and by a point in a November exhibition. He seemed to embrace the significance of the showdown.

"I think it's great for the sport," Taylor said. "You want to wrestle the best guys. You want to wrestle the best guys in the national tournament. You want to win matches that you're going to be remembered for. That's the kind of match that you win that people will remember."

It might also be just the kind of buzz that wrestling could use after the sport was voted out of the Olympics by the International Olympic Committee.

Sanderson, an Olympic champion in 2004, has been an outspoken critic of the move. He and wrestlers worldwide have mobilized to try to persuade the IOC to reverse course.

"Fans are out there. ... You've got presidents of countries fighting for this. That shows you the importance around the world," Sanderson said.

Right now, he said, he's concentrating his efforts into his own team.

"I'm just trying to do the best we can with our program now and do the best we can with the position we hold," Sanderson said. "I hope that's what every other college coach is doing right now, too, is just building their program up."

Just don't call Penn State's quest for a third team title a "three-peat."

"That's not coming from our staff," he said. "We want to win nationals this year. ... Everything in the past is great, but we celebrated that already. It's time to do something else."

Besides Taylor, junior Ed Ruth is looking to defend his title at 174 pounds, while senior Quentin Wright is also looking for a second career crown. After winning at 184 two seasons ago, Wright lost in the finals last year.

"They're not defending anything, but there's a big difference between a one-time national champion and a two-time national champion," Sanderson said, "and they have an opportunity to win a second national championship."

NVIDIA reveals Volta next-gen GPU platform

We're here at NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, and company CEO Jen Hsun-Huang has just revealed the next step in its GPU roadmap. Called Volta, it's scheduled to arrive after Maxwell, and will advance GPU technology with a ridiculous amount of memory bandwidth. Volta GPUs will have access to up to 1TB per second of bandwidth by stacking the DRAM on top of the GPU itself, with a silica substrate between them. Then, by cutting a hole through the silicon and connecting each layer it's possible to move, according to Huang "all of the data from a full Blu-Ray disc through the chip in 1/50th of a second." We aren't exactly sure what that means for graphics, but being able to process data that quickly is bound to be a boon for gamers... whenever Volta actually arrives, of course.
