Hands-on with the NTT Docomo 'Translator Phone' service

Face-to-face voice and text translation across multiple languages

We're at CTIA 2013 in Las Vegas and while a lot of business and back-end technologies are being talked about here, companies like the Japanese carrier NTT Docomo are showing off at least a couple of consumer-facing products. Its recently announced "Translator Phone" service was on display today and we had a moment to see how it all worked. The app and service, which will be pre-loaded on nearly every one of its devices going forward, gives near real-time voice and text translation between English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and several other languages.

The UI is extremely simple, and all you have to do is select which two languages you'd like to have a translated conversation between. The app then has two buttons -- for example English and Japanese -- that you tap, speak to and receive a translation. Voice is nearly instantly transcribed into text, translated into the text of the other language, then also read aloud in that language. You can then hold the phone to the native speaker of the other language, where they can read the text and give their response for you to read. The translations come through in a threaded conversation view, and any of the translations can be read aloud or re-transcribed at any time.

NTT Docomo is also working with this same technology to provide nearly real-time translation over phone calls, but it is only working in a limited capacity with English, Japanese and Chinese with about a 2 second delay when translating. The hope is to eventually provide seamless translation between languages while on phone calls one day. Be sure to watch the video above of the service in action.

Emma Watson steals hearts (not pigs) at Cannes

Celebs

The girl-formerly-known-as-Hermione continues to wow crowds around the world, including at Cannes. On Thursday she made a stylish splash on the film festival's red carpet for her new film, "Bling Ring," directed by Sofia Coppola. And in a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, she continued to spread the charm.

In the video, the interviewer asks Watson about the jewel theft at Cannes just the day before, and she immediately cries, "I promise, it wasn't me!" Then she admits that this is only her second film festival ever.

"I was told in Cannes, if they don't like your movie, you known about it," Watson said. "So I knew if we got praise it would be honest."

Mainly, though, the young actress was there to support Coppola, whom she hugely admires. And, she admitted, she didn't sign on with "Bling" because of the script: "I basically would have done any role she had offered me. It was less about the role and more about working with her."

Still, while she's not on the hook for stealing any jewels at the festival, Watson does admit in the video that there was one piece of merch from the movie she could have considered walking off with -- Paris Hilton's pig. "I thought, that would be kind of cool," she admitted.

CSN: Ortiz homers twice in Sox's win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS ? ?While starter Ryan Dempster and the Red Sox bullpen struggled, David Ortiz nearly singlehandedly delivered the win over the Twins Saturday night, as the Sox won, 12-5.
?
Ortiz went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, six RBI, and a walk. He raised his average from .344 to .362.
?
He gave the Sox an early lead with his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the first inning, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury, who singled, and Dustin Pedroia, who walked.
?
Despite the three-run lead, Dempster struggled. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He threw 127 pitches, a season high for a Sox starter. Dempster gave up five runs on eight hits and six walks, both season highs, with two strikeouts.
?
At the discretion of the official scorer, the win was awarded to Craig Breslow, the third of four Sox pitchers in the game, for being the most effective of the relief pitchers. It was Breslow?s first win of the season. He went 1 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.
?
In the second inning, Dempster walked the first two batters, with one eventually scoring, cutting the Sox lead to 3-1.
?
Ortiz struck again in the third, driving in Jonny Gomes, who walked, with a single.
?
The Sox put three more runs up in the fifth. Gomes and Pedroia led off with consecutive doubles. After Ortiz grounded out, moving Pedroia to third, Twins starter Scott Diamond was done, with Anthony Swarzak entering.
?
But he walked Napoli on four pitches. Daniel Nava?s sacrifice fly scored Pedroia. After Will Middlebrooks singled, Ryan Lavarnway singled to score Napoli, with Middlebrooks getting tagged out at third to end the inning.
?
Ortiz added his second home run of the game in the seventh, scoring Pedroia, who walked. After Napoli walked, Nava added a two-run homer of his own, putting the Sox up, 11-5.
?
Diamond took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and three walks, with strikeout, and one home run.
?
The Twins, meanwhile, were given ample opportunities by Sox pitchers, but failed to capitalize. They went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving 14 runners on base. In the second, third, and sixth innings the left the bases loaded.
?
After giving up three runs in the fifth, recording two outs, Dempster was done, with Clayton Mortensen reliving him. Mortensen went two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and a walk, with no runs. He threw 22 pitches, fewer than half (10) were strikes.
?
Breslow relieved Mortensen with one out in the sixth, walking Plouffe, his first batter, to load the bases. Breslow got out of the inning, though, getting Hicks to pop out to Pedroia in short right field. Ryan Doumit, who was on third, attempted to tag and score. But Pedroia threw to Lavarnway, who held onto the ball as Doumit bowled into him, ending the inning.
?
Alex Wilson, went two scoreless innings, giving up a hit with two strikeouts.

AT A GLANCE

STAR OF THE GAME: David Ortiz
Ortiz went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, six RBI, matching a career high, and a walk. He raised his average from .344 to .362. It was his 40th career multi-home run game, the first this season.
?
In 10 games at Target Field, Ortiz is batting .500, going 19-for-38, with five home runs and 16 RBI. This was his eighth career game recording three or more hits against his former team.
?
Ortiz has three home runs in five games on the current road trip with at least one RBI in each of those games, and 12 RBI total.
?
HONORABLE MENTION: Dustin Pedroia
Pedroia went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI, and two walks, raising his average to .341. He also made a nice play on Aaron Hicks? pop-up in the sixth with the bases loaded, throwing out Ryan Doumit trying to score, completing the inning-ending double play.
?
He extended his hitting streak to 10 games. In that stretch he is hitting .410, going 16-for-39, with five doubles, five RBI, and 11 runs scored.
?
THE GOAT: Scott Diamond
The Twins lefty started the game, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout and one home run.
?
On May 7 at Fenway Park, he went seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
?
THE TURNING POINT:
With one out in the sixth inning, and runners on first and second, the Sox leading by two runs, Craig Breslow relieved Clayton Mortensen. Breslow walked Trevor Plouffe to load the bases. Aaron Hicks popped up to Dustin Pedroia in short right field, with Ryan Doumit tagging and attempting to score from third. But Pedroia threw to catcher Ryan Lavarnway, who was bowled over by Doumit, but hung on to the ball, completing the inning-ending double play.
?
In the next half inning, the Sox scored four runs, putting enough distances between themselves and the Twins.
?
BY THE NUMBERS: 127
Dempster threw 127 pitches in his 4 2/3 innings. It was the first time he has thrown that many pitches since Sept. 13, 2011, when he threw 128 while with the Cubs against the Reds. It was also a season high for a Sox pitcher, and are tied for second-most in Target Field history.

QUOTE TO NOTE:
"Used to be but not any more. I just go about my business. You guys see me trying to hit the moon everytime I hit anyway. So it?s nothing new." --David Ortiz, on hitting against his former team.

Archaeological genetics: It's not all as old as it at first seems

May 20, 2013 ? Genomic analyses suggest that patterns of genetic diversity which indicate population movement may not be as ancient as previously believed, but may be attributable to recent events. This study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Investigative Genetics, based in the Netherlands, is able to genetically characterize geographically separated subpopulations within the country and map them to population movement within the last 2000 years.

Looking at more than 400,000 SNPs (genetic variations) of almost 1000 people across the Netherlands, this study found that the genomic diversity across the Netherlands follows a southeast to northwest gradient and that the Dutch population could be separated out genetically into four geographic groups (south, north, central-west and central-north).

These results could be explained by invoking movement of ancient, Paleolithic-Neolithic humans, similar to that proposed to explain the genetic diversity across central entire Europe. However the data also fits a model involving movement of people within the last 70 generations of modern Dutch, for which there is a wealth of archaeological evidence.

Prof Manfred Kayser from the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, who led the study, commented, "Because of the overwhelming geological and archaeological records for strong genetic discontinuities we explain our findings by recent rather than ancient events in Dutch population history. Our results not only are of epidemiological and forensic relevance but additionally highlight that future population history studies need to take into account recent demography before assuming all genetic variation observed is due to ancient events."

Up to 60 injured after car drives into Va. parade

DAMASCUS, Va. (AP) ? An elderly driver plowed into dozens of hikers marching in a Saturday parade in a small Virginia mountain town and investigators were looking into whether he suffered a medical emergency before the accident.

About 50 to 60 people suffered injuries ranging from critical to superficial, but no fatalities were reported. Three of the worst injured were flown by helicopter to area hospitals. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

Another 12 to 15 victims were taken to hospitals by ambulance and the rest were treated at the scene, where some paramedics and other first-responders were participating in the parade.

It happened around 2:10 p.m. during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail in Damascus, near the Tennessee state line about a half-hour drive east of Bristol.

Damascus Police Chief Bill Nunley didn't release the driver's name or age but said he was participating in the parade and he had traversed the Appalachian Trail in the past. Multiple witnesses described him as an elderly man.

Nunley said the man's 1997 Cadillac was one of the last vehicles in the parade and the driver might have suffered an unspecified medical problem when his car accelerated to about 25 mph and struck the crowd on a two-lane bridge along the town's main road. The driver was among those taken to hospitals.

"It is under investigation and charges may be placed," Nunley said.

Witnesses said the car had a handicapped parking sticker and it went more than 100 feet before coming to a stop.

"He was hitting hikers," said Vickie Harmon, a witness from Damascus. "I saw hikers just go everywhere."

Amanda Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car, where she and others lifted the car off those pinned underneath.

"Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she said.

Keith Neumann, a hiker from South Carolina, said he was part of the group that scrambled around the car. They pushed the car backward to free a woman trapped underneath and lifted it off the ground to make sure no one else was trapped.

"There's no single heroes. We're talking about a group effort of everybody jumping in," he said.

Nunley cited quick action by police, firefighters, paramedics and hikers to tend to the victims, including a volunteer firefighter who dove into the car to turn off the ignition. The firefighter, whose name wasn't released, suffered minor injuries.

Mayor Jack McCrady encouraged people to attend the festival on Sunday, its final day.

"In 27 years of this, we've never had anything of this magnitude, and is it our job to make sure it doesn't happen again," he said.

McCrady said a donation fund was being set up to assist the injured, some of whom don't have medical insurance.

"We want to make sure they don't suffer any greater loss than they already have," he said.
