Cats hoarded in a Fort Wayne, IN home were initially described as feral. Now authorities think some may actually belong to neighboring families.
Cats found in a filth caked house in Fort Wayne, Indiana last week were initially described as ferals and strays. As authorities condemned the house, citing high ammonia levels, they began a trapping operation to remove the approximately 50 cats from the building. Now, the story has taken a turn, and neighborhood residents who have lost cats are asked to visit Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control to see if their cats were part of the houseful at 908 Elmer Avenue. Animal Control asks that those looking for their lost cats come to the shelter this Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, bringing a photo of the missing cat and their own photo identification. The woman who collected the cats is thought to have picked cats up off the street and brought them home.
The couple renting the house from Wayne Scrogham and his siblings had moved from that house a year ago to another Scrogham owned property but continued to pay for the property housing the cats. Fort Wayne ACC director Belinda Lewis said information about the missing neighborhood cats came from conversations with the renters.
Not surprisingly, considering the inches deep feces and strong stench of urine, many of the cats are thought to be suffering from upper respiratory infections. The cats were not being sterilized and were breeding in the house.
