Youth sports set to kick off this Saturday, March 3, in Oakland ...

The 2012 Jr. Warriors Basketball League runs through March 31.

Parents: It is not too late to get your kids out of the house and away from video game consoles this spring. The city of Oakland will host two indoor and outdoor sports beginning this weekend.?

Registration still is available for the 2012 Junior Warriors Basketball league, as well as for Oakland's Parks and Recreation's Citywide Track and Field program.

The second session of the Jr. Warriors Basketball league begins Saturday, March 3. The first session ran from Jan. 21 to Feb. 25. Those interested should sign up soon as a large turnout is expected.

"The league is affiliated with the Golden State Warriors and has existed for about 20 years," Armond Gray, the youth sports coordinator for Citywide Sports, said. "About 760 kids or more are participating in this session. We have 76 teams,?girls and boys?ages 4-14."

The price or fees for individual players?is $30?and?$300?per team. However,?Gray said that if teams participated in the first session, the cost is $200 per team.

Games for the Jr. Warriors Basketball league will be played on Saturdays at recreation centers, middle schools and or elementary schools in Oakland. Girls and boys ages 10-13 years old will be playing at middle school sites and at McClymonds High School, Oakland Technical High School, and Foster Elementary School.

Girls and boys ages 4-10 years old will be playing at elementary and peewee sites including Willie Keys, Bushrod, Tassafaronga and Lincoln recreation centers. ?

"We have a large turnout at every site weekly," Gray said. "It is not too late for kids ages 4-7 to register."

Citywide Track and Field Program?

Oakland's Parks and Recreation, in partnership with 100 Black Men, will hold free track clinics every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at McClymonds High School, 2607 Myrtle St. According to Gray, the event is open to the public and prior registration is not required, but suggested.

"The clinics serve 160 youth ages 5-15 years old," he said. "For more information on these clinics, contact Willie White at (510) 238-3897."?
